This week students will be starting a new unit. We will be working with Systems of Equations, meaning they will be working with two equations as the same time to determine when the graphs of those equations intersect. We will start with doing this by graphing the two equations, then move into more algebraic methods (substitution and elimination). Below are the blank notes we will be working with during this unit. Students may print these out, use KAMI Google Extension to write on it, or see me in my classroom for a physical copy of the notes.

Students are working hard and trying to get used to the new schedule. It will take a little while to get used to having all your academic classes in one day, but I know they can do it!
We have been working on Graphing Linear Equations and Inequalities the past couple of weeks. We started with learning about slope and how to find it using a graph, table, an equation and given two points. We moved on to graphing linear equations (graphing lines). We are finishing up this section with graphing linear inequalities. Same idea as graphing lines, but now students are working with symbols like this > and <. Their lines will either by solid or dashed and they must shade above or below to represent all the solutions.
They will be taking a quiz on this material soon and getting ready for the District Common Assessment.
Below are the notes from class.

We are continuing to work on writing linear equations from word problems and then solving them. Students used Google Slides and Google Sheets this week to create a table using the equations they wrote and then created a line graph from the table. We will finish with this topic next week.
ANNOUCEMENT:
On January 21 --> Students in my Block 4 A Day Class will be taking the Renaissance Star Math Assessment again.
On January 25 --> Students in my Block 3 & Block 4 B Day Classes will be taking the Renaissance Star Math Assessment again.
After Renaissance Star Math Assessments are done, we will do a review for a test called Common Assessment. It is a test that everyone takes in the district. Each math subject has their own version of the test. It will have everything we have learned from September until now.

Just a reminder that there is not school next, November 2 - November 6. Marking Period 1 ends on Tuesday, November 17.
Algebra 1 Test on November 18 and November 20, depending on when you have class with me.
In class, we are working on solving two-step equations. We have started with some notes on how to solve two-step equations written like these examples: 2x - 1 = 5 and x/2 + 1 = 5. Students then practiced solving two step equations on IXL. During our next class, we will be practicing solving two step equations some more using PearDeck where students will be presented with a Google Slide presentation and be able to enter their answers live during our Google Meet. That is why it is very important to be present for our class and join the Google Meetings. After we are done with solving two step equations, we will get into more complex variations of solving equations, include using distributive property and with variables on both sides of the equal sign.
I am including a calendar with the schedule for the Freshman. It will tell you what days they have shops and which days they have virtual classes if they are attending school in a hybrid format.
Enjoy your week off! I'll see you when we get back!

We have finished our lesson on Identifying Parts of an Expression and Equation and moved onto Translating Math into Words. This is where students will take verbal expression like 5 less than x and translate them into the algebraic expression x - 5. This is very helpful especially when working on word problems. It helps the students identify what operations are needed in order to create the expression or equation needed to solve the problem.
Afterwards, we will be working on solving algebraic equations. We will start with 1-step equations like x-5 = 7. Then we will move onto to solving 2-step equations like 2x+1 = 5. This week, we will be spending a lot of time practicing solving algebraic equations. I want to ensure that everyone understands how to solve. This is a foundation for many topics that we will be going over in Algebra 1.
We will be preparing for another quiz soon. During our next class, we will be doing the quiz review and then taking the quiz through Google Meet. Our review and quiz will be taken through a website called Quizizz.

We are starting to get into the routine of our virtual classes now. There are still some things that are a work in progress but we are all learning together. For the past couple two weeks, students have been working on review Orders of Operations, Identifying Parts of an Expression and Equation, and completing Edulastic Assessments called Student Growth Objectives. These assessments we will be taking two more times in the year to see how much the student has grown in their understanding of the math topics.
We are not preparing for our first quiz on Orders of Operations and Identifying Parts of an Expression and Equation. Quiz review will be given to the students.

September 3 & 4, 2020
Dear Students and Parents/Guardians,
Welcome to the first day of school. I know this year is starting off differently than any other year, but we will make the most of it. Below is what you will be working on for today. For the first day of class, you will need to join my Google Classroom and my Remind101. Remind101 is a texting service that keeps all phone numbers anonymous. It provides the students the opportunity to contact me directly if they have any questions or need assistance with the assignments. You will also be reviewing my class rules and expectations and complete a Google Form with your contact information. Also, you will complete a pre-assessment to determine how much you remember of middle school math.
All my assignments will be posted on Google Classroom. Parents should add their email addresses to the contact form so I may invite you to my Google Classroom. This will enable you to receive weekly summaries of your student's progress in my classroom.
I will be available during the school day (8:30am - 4:00pm) for you if you need any help or have questions. Please do not hesitate to contact me. My email is [email protected].
I look forward to working with you this school year.
Stay safe and healthy!
- Ms. de la Cruz
